The….. gripping…. legal battle between Samsung and Apple has taken a new twist. The Galaxy S II creators are planning to use Kubrick’s renowned 2001:A Space Odyessy to try and prove that Apple are not the originators of the tablet computer. The film, which is over 40 years old, features a tablet like device and Samsung are using this as a ‘prior-art’ defense.  Click the link to read the rest… Thanks Computerweekly!

NEWS Health secretary Andrew Lansley has launched a call for new ideas for health apps to help patients make informed decisions about their care. Health secretary Andrew Lansley has called for ideas for health apps to help patients make informed decisions about their care.Photo credit: Department of Health The invitation is open to healthcare professionals and app developers. Lansley cited an existing example of what could be done, theChoosing Well app developed by NHS Yorkshire and Humber, which enables people to search for their nearest NHS services. The Department of Health (DoH) said any ideas, which also extend to online maps, should relate to one of five themes: personalisation and choice of care and support; better health and care outcomes; autonomy and accountability; improving public health; and improving long-term care and support.

After Hewlett Packard announced that it would abandon its WebOS products in a press release last week, as we reported, it lopped $200 off of its not-so-popular TouchPad tablet, selling the smaller 16 GB model for $99 and the 32GB version for $149. The masses reacted. Suddenly a device nobody wanted, as AllThingsD’s Arik Hesseldahl describes,  ”seems incredibly popular: HP’s own Web site appears to have sold out of them. Engadget noted that the TouchPad is the hottest gadget on Amazon today, but not for the newly slashed price. Hewlett Packard has confirmed plans to stop making PCs, tablets and phones, in order to refocus on software. It has also emerged that the US company has agreed to buy UK software firm Autonomy for £7.1bn ($11.7bn).
