- More than a third of smartphone users in Europe are thought to pay for applications via operator billing, according to research released on Wednesday. An online consumer survey of more than 2,000 smartphone users in the UK and Germany, carried out by billing firm Mach and research agency Opinium in April, found significant demand for direct operator billing, suggesting it could be the preferred payment method of choice for apps and in-app purchases.
- On a conference call with investors today, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop reaffirmed his company’s commitment to Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system. Despite obvious struggles with its ongoing transition, Elop says Nokia’s strategy to compete with Android is through Windows Phone and the Lumia product line. “We need to compete with Android aggressively,” said Elop. “The low-end price point war is an important part of that.” Answering a question about Windows Phones with lower price points than Nokia’s Lumia 610, Elop said Nokia is “absolutely” planning to do this.

LTE is becoming a much more common term nowadays. But what does it mean??? 3GPP Long Term Evolution, referred to as LTE and marketed as 4G-LTE, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. It is based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA network technologies, increasing the capacity and speed using new modulation techniques. Thought this might be useful! – click top link to learn more

Everything Everywhere will be in a position to offer LTE service in the UK ahead of its competitors if regulator Ofcom’s new proposals get the go-ahead. The operator, formed by the merger in the UK between T-Mobile and Orange, could offer 4G mobile services in the UK by the end of 2012, after Ofcom accepted an application to use its existing spectrum to deliver LTE services. Meanwhile, Vodafone, O2 and 3UK will have to wait until Ofcom’s 4G auction in order to gain the spectrum necessary to roll out its LTE services. The first stages of the auction are on course to begin “by the end of 2012”, a spokesperson from the regulator told Telecoms.com.

Ethernet in the first mile (EFM) refers to using one of the Ethernet family of computer network protocols between a telecommunications company and a customer’s premise. From the customer’s point of view it is their “first” mile, although from the access networks’ point of view it is known as the “last mile”. Still with us…? Excellent! click the link to learn more

Deutsche Telekom’s research wing has successfully transmitted data over a single optical fibre wavelength at 512Gbps, the company has announced. The current maximum bit rate for channels operating in backbone networks is 100Gbps. T-Labs working with Alcatel-Lucent said on Friday that the usable bit rate of the new technology would be 400Gbps per channel. “While the bar is higher for fibre-optic transmission in a laboratory setting, this record was set under real-world conditions in the Telekom optical network on a route of 734km from Berlin to Hanover and back by speed of light,” Deutsche Telekom said. As T-Labs’s system allows for up to 48 channels per optical fibre, the new technology should lead to fibre strands with a theoretical maximum throughput of 24.6Tbps.

A striking demonstration of a means to boost the information-carrying capacity of radio waves has taken place across the lagoon in Venice, Italy. The technique exploits what is called the “orbital angular momentum” of the waves – imparting them with a “twist”. Varying this twist permits many data streams to fit in the frequency spread currently used for just one.
